Italian Serie A Title Contenders

By Rick D. Lee

Serie A is Italy's top-level soccer competition. Even though it has declined a little from its peak in the 1990s, Serie A is still considered one of the strongest domestic leagues in the world. Serie A is also home to some of the most storied soccer clubs in Europe. Here are 3 title contenders for the incoming 2009/10 Italian Serie A season:
1. Inter Milan. Known simply as Inter, this famous soccer club is the champion of Serie A for the last 4 years. Possessing the strongest and most complete squad in Italy, Inter is widely expected to win the Serie A title again this season. Inter is owned by billionaire oil magnate Massimo Moratti and coached by the famous Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho. Throughout its illustrious history, Inter has won 17 Serie A titles and 2 UEFA Champions League titles.
2. Juventus. Relegated to Serie B after the 2005/06 season for its involvement in the Calciopoli scandal, Juventus was able to get back in the top flight of Italian soccer within 1 year. Juventus is the most decorated soccer club in Italy with 27 Serie A titles and 2 UEFA Champions League titles. They also finished second in the league last season. Now coached by rookie coach Ciro Ferrara, Juventus is Inter's biggest rival for the 2009/10 Serie A title.
3. AC Milan. Known simply as Milan, this soccer club is owned by the Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi. Milan is based in the same city and shares the same Giuseppe Meazza stadium with Inter, but there's no lost love between these two clubs as they've been great rivals in Serie A for many years. Throughout its history, Milan has won 17 Serie A titles and 7 UEFA Champions League titles. Along with Inter and Juventus, Milan is considered a strong favorite to win the Serie A title in the 2009/10 season.
